NASA World Wind introduction

At this moment, the NASA World Wind has a disadvantage that this can work only on the windows and using the .Net libraries and the DirectX. However the NASA World Wind has is about to develop a version in java using the JOGL soon. The NASA World Wind plans to feature an API-centric architecture having the functionalities that are “off-loaded” to the modular components. Thus, it leaves behind the API as the core. The intention of the NASA World Wind behind doing so is to facilitate the users to use the plug-ins interchangeably. This is to be done via Python. When this process has been done, the users can access the NASA World Wind through the browsers as well.

The add-ons and plug-ins can be added to the NASA World Wind and they increase the features and thus are useful for the users.

Because of its resolution, it can show separately, the adjacent houses, buildings, cars, etc. This feature is called USGS. Moreover, in some of the metropolitan areas, with the help of the USGS Urban Ortho layer, it can show the resolution distinguishing even the shadows of the people.

However, the above said resolution is only for places in the US. Even then, the minimum resolution for the other regions is at least more than 15 meters for each pixel.

The NASA World Wind provides the features as the SRTM data, NASA SVS, MODIS imagery, and Globe. They are useful for knowing the different events that occur in the world. The globe provides the data of the climatic parameters as temperature, atmospheric pressure, etc.

SRTM data:

Its full form is Shuttle Radar Topography Mission Data. This in combination of the Land Sat 7 imagery allows the NASA World Wind to provide a very dramatic and virtual image of the earth and that too at the eye level. Therefore, while making use of this feature, you will feel that you are practically flying to any location for viewing it with your eyes. Moreover, the NASA World Wind can also provide the magnified views of the different places.
