Google Earth provides a number of useful features and tools. Still it is trying to improve further. In addition to viewing imagery for Earth, you can also view astronomical images with the help of the Sky Mode feature.
Google Earth makes use of the DEM (digital elevation model) data. This data was collected by NASA's Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM). Because of this, it can provide 3D images of Grand Canyon or Mount Everest from November 2006, Google Earth has improved the 3D views of most mountains like Everest. This was done by using the supplementary DEM data, which it used for filling up the gaps, which remain in the SRTM coverage.

Most land areas in Google Earth are covered in high quality satellite imagery that has a resolution of 15 m per pixel. You will find that some population centers are covered using ortho photography (aircraft imagery) with many pixels per meter. Oceans (water bodies) and islands are covered at a lower resolution. Islands off southwest England are covered at a resolution of 500 meters or less.

We are not the company "Google" which is a registered trademark. We are a non affiliated 3rd party who is providing no cost tips, advice and troubleshooting for various software included in the "Google Software Pack".
I highly recommend the Google Software Pack. It comes with a lot of great software that is all FREE. You can also pick and choose which of the software products you want to download. You don't have to download them all. If you have a Mac or you don't want the Google Software Pack for some reason you can download it directly from the main site.
