President Dwight D. Eisenhower found the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in 1958 against the Soviet Union’s introduction of the first artificial satellite. NASA came out of the National Advisory Committee on Aeronautics who is researching flight technology for more than forty years. President John F. Kennedy gave importance to NASA and the Nation and send astronauts on the Moon in 1960s. While working on mission Mercury and Gemini NASA build up knowledge and proficiency essential for flight. The day was 20th July 1969 when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldine put the first foot on the moon.

After World Wind NASA was developed on .NET platform, the development team comes to know the scope of application. They recognized what kind of wonders they can make with the application. This project was started as trial project and soon attracted attention of many people looking at its features, funtionlility and what they can do with the application. Many developers and experts were invited to discussions on the progress of software building. The community got positive response from all over the experts. They promised to help in the development process and to transfer it from .NET to Java platform. NASA hired additional contractors and provided additional funds to deliver robust system.

World Wind program is an open source program, which has been created by NASA that will allow users to place different kinds of overlays on a high quality globe. Users are able to spin the globe and then zoom in to view different places from a close distance. Overlays include borders, landmarks, hurricane paths, weather and other downloadable add-ons. Since this software is an open source program, add-ons have started popping up on the Web.

Opportunities related to Astronaut: Moon, Mars and beyond include an internal solicitation for subject matter experts. An external solicitation for educational content development is World Wind NASA. LT conducts NASA educational activities in Teen Second Life at NASA INSPIRE Island, Eye4You Alliance and Remap Island. Building competitions, career fairs and more activities are available. LT is developing NASA Education Island on Second Life's main grid. There are opportunities for educators and adult students to get involved during development and as new NASA Education Projects come to the island.
