Google Earth, FAQ, General information, and comparison of the 3 versions

The three versions of Google Earth provides the same imagery however they differ in their features and support. Google Earth is a version of personal use, while Plus and procedure are loaded with features because of which they prove to be useful for commercial or professional use as well.

Is it possible to open Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet in Google Earth?

This is possible with Google Earth Plus and Pro. However, remember that that spreadsheet would be just viewable. If you are using Google Earth Plus(for personal and home use), you can ingest 2500 points of data at a single time.

What is causing problems with using Gramin or Magellan device?

If the GPS data is not able to load in Google Earth Plus or Pro you can try the following steps.

a) If you are using a Magellan serial device like the Map 330, Meridian series, or SporTrak please check whether your baud rates is set to 4800 baud/sec.

b) If you are using a Gramin device, choose “Gramin” as your interface GPS device. Remember that “Gramin DGPS” and “Gramin” are not the same thing.

c) If you are using Gramin USB device on a Windows machine, you need to install the Gramin USB driver. This you can do from the CD that you had got along with your GPS device.

Comparing Google Earth products and support

The target areas of Google Earth, Google Earth Plus and Google Earth Pro are different from each other and therefore they differ in their features and support.

Google Earth and Google Earth Plus are targeted for general viewers. The general users can use them for information and entertainment for personal use. On the other hand Google Earth procedure offers such features which are useful for professional and commercial purposes.

An important thing to note is that the imagery provided by all the three products is the same. However, they differ in their functionality and support. The differences in them are discused below.

Google Earth(free version)

Its aimed to be used for personal and non-commercial use. It provides you an interactive, 3D exploration of Earth. This is done through terabytes of satellite and aerial imagery.

It has features like Zoom in/out on locations, 3D views of terrain, and buildings, search for hotels, dining locations, and other points of interest data layers. The results of your search appear right on the 3D Earth view, and therefore it is easy to layer more than one searches or save results in folders. You can also share your results with others.

Google Earth Plus

All of the above given features are provided by Google Earth Plus as well. The additional features are as follows.

Higher resolution printing which is useful for larger and clearer printouts.

Data importing which is useful for reading up to 100 address points from CSV files.

GPS data importing which is useful for reading tracks and waypoints from select GPS devices.

Google Earth Pro

This is for professional and commercial purposes. Google Earth Pro is endowed with such features that it can be used for, preparing presentations research, collaboration tools, etc for geographic information.
