One of the excellent basics of Google earth that you should learn is navigation the globe with Google earth. In Google earth you will see the globe and you can also see the terrain of the globe in 3D viewer. There are several ways if you want to navigate through 3D view of the earth. You can do it by making the use of mouse and you can do it by making the use of navigation controls.

Making use of mouse: if you want to start navigation with mouse you have to park the cursor in middle of 3D viewer. Then you have to click either right or left button of the mouse and then move your mouse so that you can observe the changes in viewer. On which mouse button you click matters more because according to that the cursor changes the shape to point out change in behavior. When you will move the mouse clicking one of the tabs you are able to do various things such as you can drag the view in whichever direction you want. You can also rotate the view. You can also zoom in or zoom out view. There are several ways to zoom in with your mouse such as if there is scroll wheel in your mouse you can use that scroll wheel to zoom in by scrolling to you.

The other way you can follow is you have to fix the position of the cursor on screen and then click on right button of mouse. When you will notice that the cursor is changing to double arrow you have to move your mouse back side or you have to pull mouse towards you.

The other way is you have to double press anywhere in 3D viewer to zoom in to that area. And then single click when you want to stop it.

There are various kinds of ways to zoom out with your mouse like by making the use of right button of your mouse you have to double press anywhere in 3D viewer to zoom out from that area. The other way is if there is scroll wheel in your mouse you can make use of this scroll wheel to zoom out by scrolling away from you. You can rotate the view if there is middle button or a scroll wheel in your mouse. To rotate the view you have to select the middle button and then click on it and you have to move your mouse to the right side or to the left side.

You can make use of navigation controls. So in order to view and to use navigation controls you have to park the cursor in the right corner of 3D viewer. And when you open Google earth and when you bring your cursor on this area navigation controls become lighter when you park the cursor anywhere. So in order to view controls again you have to park the cursor in the right corner of 3D viewer.

I highly recommend the Google Software Pack. It comes with a lot of great software that is all FREE. You can also pick and choose which of the software products you want to download. You don't have to download them all. If you have a Mac or you don't want the Google Software Pack for some reason you can download it directly from the main site.
