Navigation in Google Earth

Viewing the Globe: Every time you launch Google Earth, planet Earth becomes visible in main window. Area that displays Earth is called 3D viewer. 3D viewer appears always in Google Earth and displays terrain, imagery, and useful information about places that are around the globe.

Zooming In: It is very easy to zoom in and out of places and landmarks like Grand Canyon. There are various ways to achieve this.

Zooming in Using a placemark: In this software, a placemark is nothing but a notation that marks a particular location. Every placemark in Google Earth is visible as a pushpin along with a label. For zooming to a place such as Grand Canyon, take the help of an existing placemark.

1] In places panel, first locate sightseeing folder. You will have to scroll down for viewing this folder.

2] Expand sightseeing folder by simply clicking on +

3] Double click on Grand Canyon place entry. The software will zoom to Grand Canyon.

Zooming Out and In using the mouse.

Once you zoom in using a place mark, now you can zoom out and in with the help of your computer's mouse. To perform this:

1] Zoom out from Grand Canyon by performing any 1 of the following:

Scroll your mouse wheel down (in your direction) many times.

Holding down alternate mouse button, you will have to drag your mouse up. Perform this many times.

2] Now zoom in to Grand Canyon again by simply doing the opposite. Do any 1 of the following

Scroll your mouse wheel up (i.e. away from you) many times. Holding down alternate mouse button, now drag your mouse down. Perform this many times.

Zooming in and out with the help of Navigation controls:

In Google Earth Navigation controls will appear in top right corner of 3D viewer. They provide the same kind of navigation action, which is achievable with mouse navigation and also some additional features.

For viewing and using navigation controls, you will have to move the mouse cursor over top right corner of 3D viewer. Navigation controls will appear automatically whenever you do this: If you move your mouse cursor elsewhere these controls will fade away from sight.

For now just practice to zoom out and in using navigation controls. Perform the following steps to do this:

1] If navigation controls are not appearing in the right, then move the mouse cursor over this area. Navigation controls will definitely appear:

2] Zoom out by simply clicking zoom out button.

3] Zoom in by simply clicking zoom in button.

You can also make use of zoom slider for zooming out and in.

Tilting the view: Once you are familiar with how to zoom out and in, you are now ready to see the Earth in 3 dimensions. For doing this, you will have to tilt your viewpoint in order to see elevation changes on Earth's surface. Using this feature is indeed a fun, especially when you are seeing mountainous and hilly terrain. As with zooming, here also there are various ways for tilting the view.

I highly recommend the Google Software Pack. It comes with a lot of great software that is all FREE. You can also pick and choose which of the software products you want to download. You don't have to download them all. If you have a Mac or you don't want the Google Software Pack for some reason you can download it directly from the main site.
