Using Layers in Google Earth

The 'Layers' feature in Google Earth provides different data points of interest that you can choose for displaying over the viewing area. These include terrain, road, map, points of interest and also building data.

Here are some tips on how to use points of interest (POIs)

Follow these steps if you want to view a point of interest in the viewing region.

1] Adjust the 3D viewer to include the region that you want to explore. If you wish to find all colleges in a particular place or city, you need to adjust the viewer in order to see the entire city. This is possible by expanding size of your viewer. Or by zooming out. You can expand the viewer by using maximize window control or using the mouse you can drag the size of your window.

2] To expand ‘layers’ double click on it. For viewing certain categories of POIs, you also can expand folders within 'Layers folder'.

3] Choose your points of interest that are in the list. In case if there is any business or points of interest of selected type in your viewing area, then that icon will appear in your viewer. Certain selections like geographical features (lake) may not produce an icon, instead will show a label near the region.

Copying or saving POIs (points of interest) to my places: Once you have located a POI that you would like to save for your future Google Earth sessions then you should right click on it and then choose 'save to my places' from pop up menu. An alternate method is, right click, and then select copy from pop up menu. You then paste it over the target folder in 'places panel.

Viewing the layer sub categories: There are some (POIs), which behave like a folder, in which there are categories of data. These POIs are indicated by plus icon, which have to be clicked for viewing sub categories. For instance 'dining' layer does contain sub categories of all kinds of dining from seafood to fast food. You can always turn on the restaurant information to know about a particular type of dining or else you can select 'Dining 'checkbox for displaying all dining types.

Tuning display of points of interest: Because Google Earth delivers hundreds of POIs (Point of interest) to a view, icons that mark these POIs can also be changed to make viewing easier. The most common problems that are associated with POI display are as follows:

The POI does not appear over the area where you were expecting. Icons do not appear at all. Icons overlap making it difficult to view the one that is being covered.

Try the following for resolving the issue: Zoom closer to the area to check if the icon is appearing Icons sometimes become visible at different elevations. All icons do not appear from an extended elevation. Viewing icons from a lower elevation will often resolve your problem of icons that seem to overlap when they are seen from a higher elevation.

I highly recommend the Google Software Pack. It comes with a lot of great software that is all FREE. You can also pick and choose which of the software products you want to download. You don't have to download them all. If you have a Mac or you don't want the Google Software Pack for some reason you can download it directly from the main site.
