2006 Geography Awareness Program and Google Earth
Google Earth software has a lot of applications in a number of fields like media, NGO, real estate, commercial estate and Insurance. Google earth can also be used to increase your general knowledge. It is a more useful to school going kids and college students. Google and My Wonderful World have joined hands for geographic literacy.
They have decided to use Google earth to make people aware of the geography of different countries on the earth. Since the year 1987 every year the third week of November is celebrated as geography awareness. Geography is promoted in Canada and US. Every year the focus is on different regions of the planet. In 2006 the topic was Africa.
Interactive quiz on Africa- the continent of Africa is laden with beautiful landscapes, wild animals and rich culture. Hence Google and My Wonderful World have come up with an interactive quiz on Africa. You can test your knowledge on Africa with this quiz.
Why was Google earth chosen as a medium for this awareness? It is because the satellite imagery of Google earth has satellite imagery with rich content. This makes it very easy for the user to fly to and explore any place on the earth. If a user wants to access this content he/she should check out the layer panel on Google earth. Next he/she can click on the Featured Content check.
The content in this feature is updated on a regular basis. The information is collected from a number of sources like Discovery Networks, UNEP, National Geographic Magazine and others. Overlays e.g. movies featured articles, images live shooting of African jungles etc are contained in the layers. New content layers are being launched to show Africa in more details.
Spotlight on Africa - In this layer, each African country is shown by its flag. When a user clicks on a flag all the information related to the country is displayed. This includes the geography, history, government, society etc of the particular country.
Tracks 4 Africa- This layer displays tracks, roads, points of interest, snippets, trails and photos of African countries. This data can be used to map the country. Track4Africa, an eco-travel community lead effort collects this data with the help of GPS devices. Rumsey Historical Maps- this layer is useful for a student of history or anyone interested in history. It has all the old maps of Africa right from 1680 to 1892. A map of Africa in the year 1787 is also included.
In the third week of November some information on Africa was released everyday on the blog. There is also a list of lesson plans, photos, maps, and web features etc. This program dealt with a new issue every day. Some of these programs are Animal conservation, Geographical information systems, People and Cultures, History natural resources. Google and My Wonderful World have taken a good initiative in making more and more people aware about the interesting facts of mother earth by introducing this program.Google, Google Earth, Maps, Uses, Functions, Awareness Programs,
