3D viewer options in Google Earth
Google Earth provides many 3D viewer settings that can be easily modified. It also provides features that you can activate to get special 3D display.
Displaying a Longitude / Latitude Grid: Google Earth offers a special layer that can be accessed from view menu. It displays a grid of longitude and latitude lines over imagery in 3D viewer. For turning on the grid, perform any one of the following: Select view and choose Lon/Lat grid or else you can type Ctrl + L.
The grid appears as white lines over 3D viewer with each longitude/latitude degree labeled across the centre of 3D viewer and then find out its geospatial coordinates with the help of grid.
On zooming in the detail, lines are seen in more detail. For instance from a eye elevation of around 100 miles, Nevada, Las Vegas is visible north of 36th parallel and west of 115th meridian. The grid lines continue to increase even after you zoom past base resolution of earth imagery.
Switching over to full screen mode: Google Earth application can be used in either full screen or window mode. For entering in full screen mode or returning from window to full screen mode do the following:
Select view and full screen from menu. Press F11 key. You can use the above options to switch over to full screen mode even when making presentations or touring places.
Setting view size: Use view size options under view menu for selecting preset aspect ratios that are designed for printing modes or playback modes. The selected option then resizes your 3D viewer so that you get the best display for intended purpose. For instance if you want to set your machine's display to a overhead projector, you can select the best aspect ratio that is supported by that projector. To get good video quality output, select appropriate TV view settings. For playback, you should select TV or computer. For printing purposes, you should select from four aspect ratios for paper sizes.
Using Overview map: The overview map window feature shows additional view of planet Earth that has a position indicator, which corresponds to current view inside 3D viewer. If you want to hide or show overview map window then perform any one of the following steps:
1] Click on view button and then select overview map
2] Click CTRL + M
Overview map features make Google Earth user friendly and interactive. Overview map window can be used to determine position of current view relative to planet Earth. For instance if a KMZ file is opened from Google Earth community, your 3D viewer may fly to a unfamiliar location on the Earth. You may have to open Overview Map window for seeing the position of current view relative to entire Earth. When you start adjusting position of 3D viewer, the indicator in Overview map adjusts continually to reflect current position of 3D viewer. Over map view window is also useful for controlling the motion in 3D viewer itself.
