Wikipedia and Panoramio Layers in Google Earth

Google earth is constantly updating its Sky mode feature. The Google Earth Street Views provide a virtual tour of streets of a number of cities. The feature of wikipedia and panoramio integration is another useful feature of Google Earth.

You can download Google Earth for free however for this you need to have a system satisfying the minimum requirements.

The advanced features like multi-wavelength data, orbits and current positions of satellites, etc are provided by the Google Earth community and Christian and Conti's “website for Sky”. With the Sky mode You can also view starts, galaxies, constellations etc in animated form resembling their orbits.

Recently Google Earth is producing a real-time Google Sky mash up of the current astronomical Transients. For this it is using the VOEvent protocol which is provided by VOEeventNet collaboration. Google updates these images every 5 minutes.

Google Earth Street View

This feature provides a panoramic street-level views of a number of cities and their metropolitan region. These views are available at 360° and the resolution is as high as ground level. At the time when it was launched only five cities were covered under this feature. However today more than 40 cities in the United States are covered. The suburbs of most of these cities and in some cases even the nearby cities are covered.

When you operate the Google Earth Street View, you can see photos from a camera which was mounted on an automobile. You can navigate them with the mouse. For different actions, different icons are displayed on your screen. Just click the ones, which you want. In the form of these icons you also get the option of altering the size of these photos, change the direction and angle of view, etc.

Wikipedia and Panoramio integration

In December 2006 a new layer called the “Geographic Web”, was added in Google Earth. This layer is an integration of Panoramio and Wikipedia. In Wikipedia you can scrap the entries for coordinates using the Cord templates. If you choose the options for showing wikipedia or Panoramio entries, you will be able to see Panoramio and wikipedia entries, right on Google Earth. You can also use the community-layer from the project Wikipedia World.

Additional coordinates are used and several types are in display. More languages are supported than the ones which are built-in wikipedia layer.

I highly recommend the Google Software Pack. It comes with a lot of great software that is all FREE. You can also pick and choose which of the software products you want to download. You don't have to download them all. If you have a Mac or you don't want the Google Software Pack for some reason you can download it directly from the main site.
