Some important notes on Graphics cards used for Google Earth

What are the issues with S3 graphics cards? On downloading Google Earth it will be automatically installed on your computer.

Some S3 graphics cards have compatibility issues with Google Earth. The issues are discussed below.

A very important thing to note while using S3 graphics cards need .0074 or higher.

Via S3 Unichrome may render incorrectly while using OpenGL. So it is advisable to use DirectX only.

Via S3 Savage4 will not start with DirectX. Therefore, for this you need to use OpenGL only. (OpenGL reverts to software rendering). So for running Google Earth in such a case you need to have the latest drivers for Via S3 Savage4.

Via S3 SuperSavage and ProSavage DDR will render improperly and/ or crash because of driver problem if you are using OpenGL.

You cannot go full screen without getting “Apologies – Internal Error.” Therefore, try reducing screen size, detail area of Google Earth, and pixel depth of Google Earth to 16, and/or depth of screen to 16. if this does not solve the problem, download the latest driver for Via S3 SuperSavage.

Take a note that, while using DirectX, you wont be able to copy-view, email-view, and print, if you are have set the S3 display depth to 16 bit. Therefore you need to decide whether you wish full screen or email view, as both of them are not possible at a time.

Are there any issues with SiS graphics cards?

Some Sis graphics cards have compatibility issues with Google Earth.

Such graphics cards and their issues are discussed below.

SiS 315e, SiS UniVGA3 requires graphic driver (v3.60) - released 2004-07-09 or above.

OpenGL runs, but it is associated with severe rendering problems. Moreover, no filled polygons are viewable and it may crash as well. However DirectX works efficiently.

SiS 650e needs a driver version 6.14.10.3571. But it will run with both DirectX as well as OpenGl. The only problem with is that DirectX and OpenGL both have rendering movies.

Are there any known issues with Matrox Graphics cards?

Matrox G400/G450/G550/Parhelia 128 is now compatible with DirectX. OpenGL works efficiently. However on the Matrox G550 OpenGL will not function properly for filled polygons.

Are there any known issues while using 3dfx graphics cards.

At this moment these cards have not been tested by Google Earth. However they need Microsoft Windows 98 support, but this is not available.

I highly recommend the Google Software Pack. It comes with a lot of great software that is all FREE. You can also pick and choose which of the software products you want to download. You don't have to download them all. If you have a Mac or you don't want the Google Software Pack for some reason you can download it directly from the main site.
