Drawing polygons and Paths in Google Earth

You can easily draw free form polygons and paths in 3D viewer and then save them in 'My places' folder just as you save a folder or placemark. Polygons and paths share all features of your placemark data including description, name, location, and style view. Once you have created a path, you can choose and then play a tour of the path. It is also possible to modify the polygons and paths once you have created them.

Here the steps given below that help you to draw a polygon or path in 3D viewer.

1] Position your 3D viewer to include the region that you intend to mark. If your view is more detailed then your drawing will follow land feature more closely. From add menu, you have to select polygon (press Ctrl + Shift + G), path (press Ctrl + Shift + T). The new polygon or new path dialog box will appear and the cursor transforms to square drawing tool. Enter properties of your drawing just as you do in other kind of places data. For instance, you can change color, style properties for the polygon or path. The default color is white. Click in viewer to begin your drawing and then use the methods given below for achieving the desired shape.

Free form shape: You have to click once, hold the mouse and then drag. The cursor then changes to up-arrow for indicating that you are in free form mode. When you drag your cursor around 3D viewer, outline of shape will follow the path of the cursor. When drawing a path, a line will appear as a result. However, when drawing a polygon a shape will evolve from the path of the cursor that will always connect ending and beginning points.

Regular Shape: You have to click and release. Move your mouse cursor to a point and then click for adding additional points. If you observe, the cursor will remain square drawing tool in this mode when you draw polygon or path.

For navigating in 3D viewer when you are creating a new polygon or path, you should use the navigation panel or keyboard controls.

A combination of drawing modes can also be used to combine straight edges with curved edges. To transit from free form to regular mode, release mouse button and then position the mouse pointer to new place and then click. A straight edge is then drawn between last point and most recent one. When you reverse the process, you again enter the free form mode.

If you are making a new polygon, you can easily make the shape of the polygon a 3D object. For doing, this performs the following steps:

1] Click on Altitude tab

2] Sliding the slider from the ground towards space will elevate the polygon. You can elevate the shape of the polygon to appropriate height.

3] Check the 'extended sides' to ground. Your polygon now is a 3D object.

4] Click on OK for saving your new polygon or path

I highly recommend the Google Software Pack. It comes with a lot of great software that is all FREE. You can also pick and choose which of the software products you want to download. You don't have to download them all. If you have a Mac or you don't want the Google Software Pack for some reason you can download it directly from the main site.
