Google Earth… India’s best friend
The satellite images in Google earth have revealed those things that would have gone Unnoticed and would have caused a real problem. Had it not been Google earth there The Indian tribes in the far remote of the Amazon rain forest would not have discovered the illegal mining activity in their traditional habitat. Google earth has once again proved its human side this time for the Indians. Google earth’s model as well as its satellite images have proved as valuable in solving the problems of public interest. Indians have come to know about the tremendous potential of the Google earth enterprise. The following discussion will prove the facts mentioned.
India’s Science and Technology Ministry has launched a new innovative project that is based on the highly useful and pervasive Google Earth mapping engine, the ministry has already set up equipments in famous Chandini Chowk area of Old Delhi. In this project they have set up live cameras that covers an area of about twenty kilometers and there is also a three-dimensional surveillance system. The surveillance system is modeled on the Geographical Information System (GIS). With all this system installed the authorities could check for any illegal activities going on in the area. Anyone trying to disrupt normal life could be caught live. The modeled system showed its results and caught an illegal construction going on in the area. Taking inspiration from this incident the Municipal Corporation of Delhi has decided to have these cameras to record all constructions that are illegally built like having an extra floor added to the existing one.
This project will also help the authorities to punish the perpetrators who will be caught live on the camera and this will be used as evidence against them in the court. The authorities will be able to pinpoint encroachments by using this technology. Google Earth has really done a great service by providing accurate images of lands in India which were declared infertile and were about to be taken away from the poor farmers, but Google earth’s images showed exactly the opposite and the Government was exposed. The story relates to the state of Maharashtra where the Government’s new scheme has been introduced in an effort to boost development. The SEZ controversy is raging in the region and fertile lands are seized on account of being infertile. The SEZ means Special Economic Zone where special duty-free area is designed to promote foreign investments in a huge scale of economic activities. The story took place in a place just 140 kilometers away from Mumbai, the financial capital of India. In a village called Pen the farmers were told to part with their land for the SEZ project since their land was infertile.
The authorities told the farmers that a very area of their land was fertile and the remaining area was under the saline creek water. The farmers were very poorly compensated then an NGO like organization called SEZ Hatao Sangharsh Samiti, which is an anti SEZ group took the help of Google Earth, which showed that the land was not infertile and low in production. The images from Google earth became a proof for the farmers to back their claims for their land. All this grabbed the attention of others and the case seems to be in the farmer’s favor, if the Government accepts this claim then all the land will not be acquired by the Government. If the farmers get back their land then the credit will surely go to Google earth and its technology!! Google earth, images, land, government, land
