Network links with Google Earth

About Network links: Network link feature of Google Earth allows multiple clients to see the same web based or network based KMZ data and see automatically any modifications to the content. A network link will allow content publishing in a way that is identical to web browser/web page content delivery.

A network link gives an easy way to deliver data to multiple users of Google Earth: When Google Earth users access your KMZ file with the help of a network link, you can specify how frequently the data in KMZ file should be refreshed. This way updates that are made to the data are reflected automatically in all the connected clients.

Network link is mainly used as view only reference to the published content: We all know that web pages are seen by many people but can be modified by those only who have the permission. Similarly place data information can be linked and viewed by multiple users and can be changed only by one person. Users who view the content of web pages can save the content to their local computer but these users receive dynamic content via network link.

Creating Network link: Before you start creating a network link, the content that you intend to link must be present on the web server or network. If you are writing the content, then you should save KMZ files to the network server. If you are linking the content then you should know the URL of the file if it is on the web server. If the file is on the network server then you must know its exact location.

You can select any one of the ways given below to start: Choose network link from add menu. Choose network link from popup menu. Right click on the folder in my places panel. You will have to do CTRL click if it is a MAC operating system. From the pop up menu select add option and then click on network link. When a network link is added in this way, the folder selected automatically becomes the container for network link.

The network link dialog box will appear. Enter name of the link in Name field. Enter full path of KMZ file in link field or else you can browse to file location if the kmz file is on the network. You can make use of URL for referencing the KMZ. The 3D viewer then immediately flies to default view for linked data.

Enter HTML or descriptive text. You have to enter this data in a similar way that you would do for a folder.

Click view tab for changing the default view that is shown by this network link to users. Click on snapshot current view for using your current view in the Google Earth. If the network link contains more than one placemark, click reset button to show these placemarks to users. The text that you type in this description is the description of link but it cannot be viewed by anyone else unless and until you mail the folder.

I highly recommend the Google Software Pack. It comes with a lot of great software that is all FREE. You can also pick and choose which of the software products you want to download. You don't have to download them all. If you have a Mac or you don't want the Google Software Pack for some reason you can download it directly from the main site.
