New features in Google Earth 4.3

Suns and Shadows:

Displaying the Sun:

The sun as well as sunlight can be displayed across the landscape. For doing this, do the following:

1] Click on view> sun or Sun button. Google Earth will display the present level of daylight at location that you are viewing. The time slider will appear.

2] To change time of day, you need to drag time slider left or right. Depending on time of year and location, you can view the sunset or sunrise while looking west or east.

3] For displaying animation of sunlight, you need to click time slider play button.

4] For hiding the sun, you have to click on view>sun

This feature generates dramatic effects especially when mountains or hilly terrain is viewed.

About the imagery dates: Google Earth always displays approximate date of the imagery that is displayed. The date will be seen in status bar that is at the bottom in 3D viewer. As the mouse cursor hovers on a location, this information depicts date of imagery. However, this date is not accurate but is only approximate.

Viewing 3D buildings:

1] Google Earth displays both simple and 3D buildings folder in Layers panel.

2] Position your viewer within reasonable viewing altitude over major city like San Francisco. From an elevation of 10000 to 11000 feet, some 3D buildings will begin to appear. To find the current viewing height, you need to check eye location meter on lower right of 3D viewer. 3D buildings generally appear as gray objects over imagery of your city.

3] More details appear when you zoom in. Use navigation controls to obtain the best view of buildings.

4] When your mouse hovers over certain buildings, they appear purple. Click on these buildings to see additional information from 3D Warehouse.

5] To hide a 3D building, you have to right on it and then select 'Hide building'. You won't be able to see this building unless and until you again start the application.

How to interact with 3D buildings: Once you have displayed 3D buildings, you have to do the following:

Swoop to the side or top of 3D buildings: For doing this, you have to right click on the building and then drag the mouse cursor. You can easily swoop from one building to another. This feature doesn't work with your imported sketch up models.

View 3D buildings from different perspectives: For doing this, you have to click on middle button. In case your mouse doesn't have middle mouse button then you have to shift+ mouse button.

How to view Google SketchUp 3D models:

For doing this, you need to do the following:

1] View sketchup.google.com

2] Search for model that you like and then click on it.

3] Click on download to Google Earth. This option might be unavailable for all models.

4] When you zoom in, you will be able see more details and you can view entire shape of that model.

5] Make use of tilt and navigation tools so that you get to see the best view of that model.

I highly recommend the Google Software Pack. It comes with a lot of great software that is all FREE. You can also pick and choose which of the software products you want to download. You don't have to download them all. If you have a Mac or you don't want the Google Software Pack for some reason you can download it directly from the main site.
