The Lost World
Since its launch, Google Earth has contributed in discoveries across the globe. It has been more of a handy globe that goes beyond just showing the names of the places. Discovering something in the world was never this easy. Now you don’t need to pack your bags and plan a long trip across the globe to go on an expedition all you need is a PC and the latest version of Google earth on it. You will never know what you will discover. So being an explorer in the Google Earth times is an easy job.
Using the Google Earth a team of conservationists found a piece of jungle that was previously unexplored. The location is at the peak and on the other side of a mountain that was never heard of before. The mountain is named Mount Mabu. This mountainous area in the Southern Africa had been overlooked by wildlife experts and map makers because of its difficult landscape and decades of war. It was discovered only when British Researchers when they spotted an unexpected patch of green forest on Google earth. The discovery of this mountain and the green paradise around it has lead to the discovery of many new species of insects, animals as well as plants.
A team of scientist that was sent to the spot discovered 27 miles of lush, rich forest full of exotic plants, insects and birds. Hundreds of exotic butterflies were also found. The animals that were discovered include pigmy chameleons, Swynnerton’s Robin and butterflies such as the small stripped swordtail and emperor swordtail.
According to the scientists, the trees at Mount Mabu are nearly 150 feet tall and were the home to loud samango monkeys. And the forest floor consisted of small klipspringer antelopes and blue duiker antelopes.
The expedition leader says that nobody knew about the place and the literature related to the place also did not mention the word Mabu. He believes that it might be exists under another name. He says that this might be the biggest area of medium-altitude forest in Southern Africa. And yet it was not in the map under the name of the Mount Mabu. The team of scientists observed that outside these forests, the roads have been devastated by the civil war but inside the forest, the landscape was almost untouched. The locals had kept quite about the location because they used it as a refuge when the fighting was intense.
After the discovery of this place, Birdlife had made it clear that they had plans to recognize it as an Important Bird Area (IBA), because there are chances of finding a lot of new species and also some that may be near extinction.
Some scientists also believe that the best conservation strategy would be to leave that place alone. Remoteness is the best strategy for the protection of a forest that has been untouched for decades. Human presence may definitely harm its eco system.
