Using layers of Google Earth

The layer feature of Google Earth offers various data points of interest that can be chosen to display over the viewing area. These data points include points of interest as well as terrain, road, map and also building data. A number of layers are available in layers panel.

Layer data feature of this software to:

1] Display and save the points of interest

2] Display 3D buildings:

3] Display map features like roads, borders, and terrain. You can hide or display state, country or province borders by simply unchecking or checking borders in layers panel.

How to use points of interest (POIs)

Locating POIs in viewing area: Perform the following steps given below to find a particular POI in the viewing region.

1] Adjust your 3D viewer to cover the area that you wish to investigate. So if you really have interest in locating all schools and colleges in a city then you should view to entire city. This can be done by expanding size of viewer or by zooming out.

2] Double click on Layers folder so that it expands it. It is also possible to expand folders within layers folder so that you can view sub categories of POIs.

3] Choose one or more POI in the list. If there is any business or point of interest of selected type in viewing area then that icon will appear in viewer. Certain selections like geographical feature may not produce an icon, instead will display a label near corresponding area.

Copying or Saving POIs: Once you have located a POI that you wish to save for future sessions, you need to right click on it and then choose 'save to my places' from pop up menu. The other way is to right click and then choose copy option from pop up menu. You have to then paste it over target folder in places panel.

Viewing the layer sub categories: Some POI act as folder that has categories of data. All these are indicated by plus icon that you can click in order to view sub categories of that item. For instance, dining layer has sub categories of all kinds of dining, from seafood to fast food. If you want, you can also turn on the restaurant information for a particular type of dining or else you can also choose top level dining checkbox in order to display all the Dining types.

If you have selected lot of items in the category, you may right click on parent folder and then choose Hide contents from pop up menu to hide quickly all elements within category.

Tuning the display of POIs: As Google Earth software provide hundreds of POIs to single view, icons marking these POIs can be easily modified to make your viewing simpler. The common issues with POI display are as follows:

1] No icons appear

2] Icons do overlap each other, thus making it difficult to view one being covered

3] A POI does not appear over the area where you were expecting.

You don't have to download them all. If you have a Mac or you don't want the Google Software Pack for some reason you can download it directly from the main site.
