Navigation in Google Earth

It is very easy to navigate in Google Earth. In this software, you can view Earth in 3D viewer. There are several ways to navigate through the 3D view of globe. You can either use the mouse or navigation controls to move from one location to another. If you want to manipulate the view of the Earth, you can do it by simply tilting the terrain.

How to use the mouse to navigate: To begin navigating with the mouse, you have to position the cursor in middle of 3D viewer. Depending on the mouse button that you will press, the shape of cursor changes to indicate change in behavior. Moving the mouse cursor while pressing any one of the mouse buttons will allow you to.

1] Zoom in or out

2] You can drag the view in the direction you want.

3] Tilt the view

4] Rotate the view

5] Look around from single vantage point.

Using navigation controls: To view these navigation controls, you have to move the cursor in the right corner of 3D viewer. When you start Google Earth software and move mouse cursor over the above mentioned area, navigation controls will appear. These controls will fade away from the sight if you move the mouse cursor elsewhere. To see these controls again, you have to move the cursor over right corner of 3D viewer.

If these navigation controls don't appear when the cursor is moved over right corner of 3D viewer, you have to click on view option and then click show navigation button and try again.

To show or hide compass icon in 3D viewer, you have to click on view> compass. These navigation controls provide same kind of navigation action that can be achieved with mouse navigation. In addition, you can use these controls to zoom or rotate your view.

Viewing and Tilting Hilly Terrain: When you start Google Earth for the first time, default view of Earth is top-down view.

Tilt terrain from 0 to 90 degrees: You can make use of the mouse for tilting the view to see different view of the area that you are exploring. The view can be tilted to maximum of 90 degrees that provides view of horizon as well as object.

Turn on the terrain: To use the tilt feature is interesting especially if you are looking at hilly terrain. Make sure that you have checked 'Terrain' in layers panel.

Rotating the view for new perspective: Once the view has been tilted to see a hill then it is also possible to rotate around the object. When you perform this, the hill remains at the center of the view; however, you can view the hill from different directions (i.e. west, east, south, and north) as you rotate.

Using the middle mouse button for seamless movement: In case your computer mouse has a depressible scroll wheel or a middle button, you can depress button to both rotate and tilt the view. Movements down or up tilt the view.

I highly recommend the Google Software Pack. It comes with a lot of great software that is all FREE. You can also pick and choose which of the software products you want to download. You don't have to download them all. If you have a Mac or you don't want the Google Software Pack for some reason you can download it directly from the main site.
