Virtual Earth API has released its latest version i.e. 6.1. The new features of this version 6.1 are blogged by Steve Lombardi and Chris Pendleton. So let us see the various new and improved features that have been put forward for the users by Virtual Earth. Now the users will be able to view the overlay images of the roads with the help of Birds Eye Hybrid. With these features you can use VEMapStyleBirdseye if you want to see the images without label and VEMapStyle.BirdseyeHybrid or can use short b for the Birds Eye hybrid.

Vegetation in 3D is another new feature of Virtual Earth included in this version, which is great. Virtual Earth team has brought the automatic procedure to create our 3D model close to exactness. The thickness of the models is superior to earlier and the quality of the procedure is exact that you will be able to count he trees in a city. Now in Virtual Earth the first fruit is noticeable. There is also a development of the version of 3D modeling client that means the Virtual Earth 3DVIA is now obtainable.

Walking Directions feature is a simplified version of walking and is using the same way which was used for road networks for vehicles but it is with unlike rule-set. For instance you may not use the vehicles but instead of it you can walk in the opposite alongside one way street. In order to use the walking directions you have to set it VERouteOptions.RouteMode=VERouteMode.Walking. As soon as you activate this feature you will get to see the directions for the vehicles in green and for the pedestrians in blue. Another feature i.e. Localized Dashboard is obtainable if you set the mkt-parameter during loading the VEMapControl. Presently it-it, ja-jp and fr-fr have a limited dashboard till now.

Localized driving directions feature is accessible in the Virtual Earth Version 6. Till now you required to set VERouteoptions.UseMWS=true in order to fall back to the mappoint Web Service routing engine. With the latest version 6.1 you can use the VE routing engine for localized driving ways by just setting the mkt-parameter when downloading the Virtual Map. In the Precision property for VEPlace-object the geocoder returns previously flags for the MatchConfidence and the MatchCode. Now with the latest version 6.1 it also returns the precision that generally informs you if the geocode was exact to the rooftop. In US only the rooftop geocoding is available.

Another feature is Safari support which the latest map controls contain good support for Apple Safari 2 and the new support for the safari 3 permits the users to like various functions of Virtual Earth that are obtainable on Internet Explorer. This version ahs a very good printing support for maps is improved to print the driving ways in connection to the map. Printing support is also extended for cross browser support of Internet Explorer 6 and 7, Apple safari2 and 3 for Mac only and Firefox 2 for computer. Reverse geocoding feature is obtainable only in US as the users can use the Map point Web service that is the part of the Virtual Earth platform.

I highly recommend the Google Software Pack. It comes with a lot of great software that is all FREE. You can also pick and choose which of the software products you want to download. You don't have to download them all. If you have a Mac or you don't want the Google Software Pack for some reason you can download it directly from the main site.
