Marking points of interest with pushpins and safety for public collections

While sharing your collection by making it public, you have to be careful, as there are some risks associated with it.

Marking points of interest on the maps

This can be done by adding a pushpin for such points.

For making the pushpin by right clicking on the desired point, choose “Add pushpin”.

After this, you can enter one of the following options.

Title: this should be the name of the collection. It should not exceed 100 characters.

Notes: you can also add some notes to the collections. These should ideally be the description for the collection. For this, the character limit is 1000.

Photo URL: you can add a link for a photo related to this item. For example, in case you make a collection for your house you can add a link that would take the viewers to the photos of your house.

URL for more information: As the above link, this link would take the viewers to a page containing more information about the thing for which the collection is made. For example in the above case, you can add a link that would take the viewers to a page containing more information about your house.

After you choose one of more of the above-mentioned options you can click “Save”.

Alternatively, you can also add a pushpin using the pushpin button from the collections editor.

Modifying the pushpin

For this direct point to that pushpin and then click “Edit properties”.

On clicking it, you would get the options for editing the Title, Notes, Photo URL, and URL for more information. You can do the changes as per your wish. However, remember the conditions about the character limits for them.

Then you can click “Save”.

Notes:

If you wish to move the position of the pushpin, you can point it on the map and click “Move”. After this, choose a proper position for it as per your wish and put the pushpin over there by just clicking at that point.

If you connect to a file which is stored online, always make it sure that you include the complete web address. It should also include the prefix as http:// or https://.

If this pushpin is a part of a collection for public, then the public will not be able to view the images that you have stored on your computer.

Deleting a pushpin:

You can delete the pushpin any time you wish.

For this point the pushpin directly on the map, and then choose “Delete this item.

You can also delete it from the current collection. For this point it in the collections editor, and then click “Delete this item”.

Note that whichever of the above-mentioned methods you use for deleting the collection it would be deleted from both the maps as well as the collections editor.

Personal safety for the users who make public collections

Though the public collection is a great way through which the information can be shared with others, the makers of such collections should be a bit careful. This is important because the collections are available on the web and therefore any body can view them. Some of them may try something wicked or even by mistake they may do such a thing that do some harm to your collection or to you.

I highly recommend the Google Software Pack. It comes with a lot of great software that is all FREE. You can also pick and choose which of the software products you want to download. You don't have to download them all. If you have a Mac or you don't want the Google Software Pack for some reason you can download it directly from the main site.
