History: Live Search Maps is based on the Microsoft technologies like Microsoft MapPoint and TerraServer. At the time of release it did not had the features like birds eye views and 3D maps. The collections functionality also was limited. Users got only one Scratchpad of points of interest.
It was released in December 2005, and at that time Windows Live Local was actually a public face of the Virtual Earth platform. The features like 3D using a .NET managed controlling system, and interfaces for Direct3D, were added on November 6, 2006. Recently Microsoft has named its product officially as Live Search Maps. Thus it became a part of its Live Search services.
Military base deletions: In early 2008 as there was a criticism to Google Earth and similar programs that they server as a reconnaissance platform for terrorists. As a result of this Microsoft started a program in which it started deleting the high definition aerial imagery for the military bases and other sensitive regions from Live Search Maps. Thus Live Search Maps preserves the security of such places.
Compatibility: Microsoft claims that Live Search Maps is compatible with Internet Explorer 5.5 later, Safari, and Mozilla Firefox 1.5 or higher. You can also use it with Opera with some limitations.
Uses: Live search maps is a free webservice, which you can use for viewing different places around the world. Using it is very simple as it is targeted for the general users as well. However just viewing images is not the only thing, which you can do with Live Search Maps. It also provides useful data like traffic data, driving directions, businesses, people, locations and much more. Therefore, it can be used for commercial and professional purposes as well.
One of the most useful features of Live Search Maps ability to add your own listing or view listings added by others. The listings are stored in an online directory. Live Search Maps uses this directory for providing results when a users search for a particular business and their area of interest. In this listing, you can include textual information, as well as photos, graphs, etc. You can remove your listing from the local listing center at any time you want.
