A newly released tool of the Virtual Earth is the MapCruncher beta. This is an innovative tool that enables the user to import his maps, layer them and share them on a site via the Microsoft Virtual Earth platform. Now blend your drawn-to-scale map quickly with the Virtual Earth environment and generate a composite and a unique view of your map. You can also supplement the existing aerial imageries and the roads with detailed customized data just by importing the maps in the Microsoft Virtual Earth environment.
MapCruncher is a tool that is designed specifically for the purpose of converting the existing maps into the online format quickly. This process occurs very fast and it is quite simple to use. MapCruncher converts the maps into a simple Mercator projection, which is utilized by Virtual Earth. When you input a big collection of maps in this common projection, you can mix-match the maps so that you can use them in many innovative ways. MapCruncher will accept your input maps like a PDF file and then it will create a collection of small and properly aligned tiles, which you will be, able to see in Virtual Earth.
MapCruncher supports the following source of map types:
PDF: you will contain high quality results from a PDF file. This file generally contains vector graphics that appears good even when they are delivered at high zooming levels.
WMF, EMF: these formats of a file are not so common comparatively, but they generally include vector data and can generate you beat quality results.
JPG, TIFF, PNG, and BMP: these are raster formats of file, which you can use with MapCruncher. In this case, the source map needs to be at high resolution or the result will appear poor even at high zoom levels. Scanned maps like historical maps are frequently available at raster images.
MapCruncher is compatible with the similar types of browsers that are supported by the Microsoft Virtual Earth that includes Mozilla Firefox 1.5, later versions of Microsoft windows, Microsoft Internet explorer 6 and later versions of Microsoft windows, Linux and Apple MacOS X.
