Advantages of World Wind technology
Opportunities related to Astronaut: Moon, Mars and beyond include an internal solicitation for subject matter experts. An external solicitation for educational content development is World Wind NASA. LT conducts NASA educational activities in Teen Second Life at NASA INSPIRE Island, Eye4You Alliance and Remap Island. Building competitions, career fairs and more activities are available. LT is developing NASA Education Island on Second Life's main grid. There are opportunities for educators and adult students to get involved during development and as new NASA Education Projects come to the island.
The Learning Technologies Information Accessibility Lab is collaborating with several groups researching and testing methods of making virtual worlds accessible to the blind. Researchers and developers working in this area may apply for membership in our. LT has several Open Source software applications that are licensable under the NASA Open Source Agreement. Commercial licensing of our products can be done on a case by case basis. NASA Learning Technologies provides technology support to NASA projects wishing to extend their education and outreach activities to 3D virtual worlds like Second Life, Active Worlds, and others. Our Learning Technologies team has been integrating NASA content and innovative technologies since 1992. We are currently leading NASA's entry into and effective use of 3D virtual worlds like Second Life for education and outreach. We are active educational mentors in Teen Second Life, and are currently the only NASA Education presence in Teen Second Life. We have established a virtual Educator Resource Center at Education Island and are facilitating use of Second Life by the Central Operation of Resources for Educators and the NASA Digital Learning Network. We manage NASA Education Island and hold leadership positions in the SciLands region.
We provide space, support, and consulting for education projects wishing to use Second Life. We are researching other virtual world platforms that may be more suitable for some projects. Our group members sit on a range of boards and working groups, including: the Meta Institute as well as the Kira Institute, for Computational Astrophysics Advisory Council, the Journal of Virtual Worlds Research, the Virtual Worlds Advisory Board, the Association of Virtual Worlds and the NASA Immersive Synthetic Environments Research Group.
LT provides consulting services to NASA education, outreach projects on the uses of the latest technologies in education, and outreach. NASA education supports the educational technology needs of all divisions of NASA's Office of Education and Mission Directorates. Our Learning Technologies team has been integrating NASA content.
