An introduction To WorldWind

World Wind is a free of charge open basis virtual globe that is created by NASA along with the open basis society for the use on private computers successively on Microsoft Windows. This program enables the users to view USGS satellite sights, in-flight photography, widely available GIS data on 3D models of the Earth, topographic maps and other planets too. This program of NASA was released in 2004. The newest version of this application was developed by an open source and was launched on February 14, 2007. This application not only provide images of the Earth but also World Wind have some other world like Venus, Mars, Moon, Jupiter with four Galilean moons of lo, Europa, Callisto, Ganymede and images of galactics and stars. Users can view this words in file menu from which you can select what they want to view.

With the help of this program users can interact with the selected planet by zooming in and out in order to view clearly and can rotate it. World Wind contains latitude and longitude lines, five million place names, political boundaries and also other location condition from which users can select anything he or she wants to view. This program offers the capability to browse and geospatial data on the internet by using import ESRI shapefiles, km/kmz files, and OGC’s WMS servers. The high resolution images inside the US country is enough to differentiate individual buildings, cars, houses and the shade of the people of urban areas in USGS Urban Ortho layer. Microsoft has even provided to incorporate with the Virtual Earth high information for non commercial use. Many users of this application also are adding their own information and presenting them with several sources like World Wind Central or any blogs.

World Wind program can be extended with the help of several add-ons and small extensions that provides new functionality to the program. There are several add-ons like point layers which are simple XML files that displays placemarks as icons. Trail layers add-ons contains paths like boundaries and routes, place names includes specific points like buildings, hills, and cities that are assigned text labels, model features add-on is used in order to download 3D textured meshes, scripts ad-on include files that supports and control camera movement, line features is add-on that contains list of points which is visualized as a wall or line and many useful add-ons are available in this program. Plugins are small programs that are written in C#, VB or J# that are gathered and loaded by World Wind at start up. Plug-in developers of World Wind can add features to World Wind without even changing the programs source code.

The true recipe for World Wind application was limited to Windows, relying on the NET libraries and DirectX. The latest version of World Wind has been developed in java along with JOGL which is known as World Wind Java. The new version of this program has an API at the central part that build World Wind itself as a plug-in that can be applied as an exchangeable as possible.
