Appalachian Trail in NASA world wind
The Appalanchian Trail path is maintained by Trails clubs and multiple partnerships. While you are traversing the Appalachian Trail you will come across a variety of flora, fauna and marked features in geography.
The topography of the Appalachian Trail is such that it contains rivers too. Many towns are also present which cross this trail for most of the hikers.
Many of the hikers will attempt to hike it entirely non stop. Earl Schaffer was the pioneer in doing so. Many books, memoirs, web sites and fan organizations are dedicated to this pursuit.
The trail passes through the states of North California, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont and New Hampshire.
Note that the Appalachian Trail should not be confused with the International Appalachian Trail.
This is a six hundred and ninety mile extension running north from Maine into New Brunswick and Quebec. It is a separate trail actually and not a representative annex of Appalachian Trail as thought by many of the people.
Now let us get introduced to the flora and Fauna of the Appalachian Trail
Flora and Fauna:
The flora and Fauna of the Appalachian mountain range is home to literally thousands of species of animals, air, land and sea which include 2,000 types of endangered and sensitive plant and animal species.
Animals:
Now we are going to consider the animals which are found primarily in the Appalachian mountain ranges. This is a home to most beautiful species of America. It is the Black bear.
The black bear is one of the biggest animals and one of the natural threats in Appalachian mountain range.
The description of the bear is as follows: The American Black Bear is by far the largest Carnivore that can be come across by the Hikers in these mountain ranges. The scientific name of the American Black Bear is (Ursus americanus). This animal is present in all the parts of the Appalachian mountain ranges even then the interaction of this animal is seldom observed in reality. So the hiker incidents are rare.
These bears are a little frightened away by the loud noise and the presence of Humans.
Bears are not the only fauna which is found in such a large region but poisonous snakes are also found in this region namely the Eastern Timber rattlesnake and copperhead. Note that these snakes are omnipresent in this region. The favorite habitat or the hangout places of these snakes are the parched stony parts of the trail so you must remain alert while traveling in such type of regions.
The distribution of Copperhead snake is from the northern part of the Appalachian Trail to around New Jersey to New York State line.
While the range of Rattle snakes extends generally all along Connecticut.
Rarely these snakes are observed as far north as New Hampshire. Further the bulky animals include Elk and other species of deer found are rehabilitated in the Smoky mountain ranges. In the large Fauna even the Mouse is included. The moose are observed as far south as the Massachusetts. The main place where the moose is observed is known as Maine. Pests like mice and mosquitoes are also present.
