Caring the Oceans through NASA
The technology of NASA has proved to be of great significance to humankind in all the aspects of development. It has helped to improve the life on land, water, as well as on the satellites. This indeed great technology has transferred made the life of all the creatures easy.
Plankton, the simple form of plants is the main source of food of the animals living in the ocean. Similarly, like the other plants planktons feed themselves by a process known as photosynthesis. With the help of the energy obtained from the sunlight, they use chlorophyll to transfer carbon dioxide and water in simple, sugary food. The chlorophyll gives off a natural shine at the time of photosynthesis in planktons and other marine lives.
Planktons form the base of the food chains in the oceans. The small marine animals eat tem, who are in turn eaten by the other animals. This sea plankton gives away oxygen as a byproduct of photosynthesis alike the other plants. A large amount of the world’s oxygen is obtained from the planktons. Therefore, it it becomes very important for the entire world to take care of our oceans.
There are many easy practiced to check the health of the oceans. One of the ways through which the scientists check the health of the oceans is by measuring the amount of plankton in the given area. This is done by measuring the amount of fluorescence (glow) given off by the planktons in the sea. The Biospherical Instrument, Inc in association with NASA developed a system to check this. They created a new type of fluorometer. This instrument took the measurement of the light patterns in the ocean and it measured the amount of fluorescence released by the plankton and other marine life while they digest their meals of sunlight.
The Biospherical Instrument, Inc model is considered as a better model as compared to the other traditional and old models used top check the health of the oceans. It is less expensive as compared to the other models and does not disturb the small critters on the way. It can be used directly on the sites, where you want to examine the sea and there is no need ort take samples of water from their natural environment to the laboratory area to carry out the testing’s.
The fluorometer used by the Biospherical Instrument, Inc is used in waters ranging from the South and the north poles to the tropical waters of the south Pacific. NASA also funds the development of fluorometer by the Environmental Monitoring System divisions of Mill vest Corporation, Texas. The model developed by this company is pulled by a ship throughout a particular area in the ocean. The satellite instruments are later looking at this.
