Features of NASA World Wind
Blue Marble: Blue Marble is nothing but an image of the Earth. Yes, NASA observes the Earth too and not just space. The Blue Marble has high level of detail and is a colored image. It offers satellite views of the Earth at a very high resolution of 1 km per pixel. The Blue Marble changed the way we viewed the Earth. It offers monthly images of the Earth throughout a year, which show the changes that take place on the Earth with change in the seasons. Whether it is the melting of the snow in summer or greenery during the monsoon, all of it is visible with the Blue Marble. To avail of all this imagery, please take a look at the Blue Marble Next Generation collection.
NASA SVS: The NASA Scientific Visualization Studio displays some great stills, animations, and visualizations of activities taking place on the surface of the Earth. NASA works in collaboration with the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) to display these visualizations, which are in the NTSC, MPEG, and high definition formats. GDFC also models, analyzes, and predicts global weather changes. It also produces products, which help in visualizing the Earth. One can observe and understand the dynamic nature of the Earth. Be it hurricanes, earthquakes, or a tsunami; grasp how the world keeps changing every minute.
Country and State Borders: NASA World Wind displays the borders of all countries around the world very clearly. It also shows state borders of USA. As you zoom deeper, the borders become clearly visible. It also shows the mountainous terrains and the rivers on the borders.
Visual tools: While visualizing the Earth, if you want to get the exact location then there are various tools, which can help you with that. These tools can be turned on or off. For e.g., the latitude and longitudes and the coordinates are displayed for your convenience. You could turn them off if you don’t want those features.
MODIS: MODIS is nothing but Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer. The job of this feature is to show data which changes with time. The imagery is updated daily. Volcanic eruptions, floods, storms, etc. are all displayed. These events are marked across the globe so that viewer can easily download and view them.
Land Sat 7: It is a collection of extremely detailed data with a resolution of 15 m per pixel. The images in this collection were recorded in the years 1999-2003. You can see your very own city and if you zoom in further you could see the neighborhood where you live. Also, the data is precise and accurate, so you can rely on Land Sat 7 for your project or research work. You can see the imagery in various color bands too. All the images in this collection would be too much to download and would consume a hell lot of memory if stored on your PC. Therefore, what World Wind does is it stores a compresses version of all the images that you have viewed.
