How NASA’s World Wind is different from similar softwares?

NASA has launched the software named, World Wind for netizens. We will see here how NASA’s world Wind is different from similar mapping softwares. The World Wind allows the user to zoom from satellite elevation into any place on Earth with high resolution images and SRTM elevation data and you can see the Earth in 3D.

The software is made more user-friendly. Hence, people of all ages can enjoy it. You just have to click on the mouse. Menus can provide you additional features. By single clicking, you can navigate through certain area. You can also type any location and can zoom into it.

We will see now some special features that World Wind provides. You can have a copy of the Blue Marble, a true-color image of the entire Earth as viewed by NASA’s Earth laboratory, the Blue Marble. The Blue Marble is seen with the resolution of 1 km per pixel.

LandSat 7 is a collection of images from 1999 to 2003 at 15 m per pixel resolution. It includes color bands such as the infrared spectrum. Users can browse these different sets. Updates are also inherited by World Wind.

With LandSat 7's resolution, you can see your city, neighborhood, or landmarks in your locality. Combining LandSat 7 images with Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) data, users can fly around the globe in any direction.

Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) has created number of animations revealing subjects like cyclone dynamics and seasonal changes around the World. Anyone can easily understand where the event is taking place as World Wind rotates into view.

Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer or MODIS makes a set of time relevant data updating every day. MODIS collects data on fires, floods, storms and volcanic activity also. If you click on color-coded markers, the total image is downloaded and you can see it. You can download images at a resolution of 250 m per pixel. World Wind also has a "tour mode" to glide through number of samples.

Using World Wind, you can see rainfall, cloud conditions and barometric pressure also. Students can make globe samples on themselves and samples come with a temperature scale.

World Wind provides you the entire set of borders of every country and USA states. If you need precise data, you can zoom into the World. This may help you to see where rivers and mountains have created political borders.

You are provided with complete data of countries, towns, cities and historical references also. You can have latitude-longitude lines and precise coordinate data which will guide you scientifically. You can make this on or off with other features turned on etc.

You can also see actual 3D models on the Earth with the World Wind. We can say that with this software, NASA is making highly precise scientific data available to common people. Hence, use this opportunity to seek information and you can use it for your individual or professional purposes also.

I highly recommend the Google Software Pack. It comes with a lot of great software that is all FREE. You can also pick and choose which of the software products you want to download. You don't have to download them all. If you have a Mac or you don't want the Google Software Pack for some reason you can download it directly from the main site.
