In the Museum with NASA
NASA technology watches over the historic documents in the museum. In the 1982, NASA was asked to initiate a technology to determine and preserve the condition of the previous documents. The historical documents are many a times damaged by humidity, vibration or light. Therefore, NASA studied ideas based on the imaging technique that was used in spacecraft like the Hubble Space Telescope and the Galileo Probe.
It developed the imaging device. The resulting charters of the monitoring system examine the document in between and then make a comparison between different images. This system identifies the changes in shape, contrast and other features .thus, the workers at the national Archives can plan a way to stop the damages based on the results. Thus, it is a good news to al of us that the history making document related to our Founding Fathers are still being preserved and receiving good care, because of NASA.
Another application of NASA in the museum is in the space age technology. The Ames Research Center of NASA is using the Landsat remote sensing technique to help the archaeologists. The Landsat images shows the water reservoirs and canal systems built by Maya. The satellite mages also offered new inventions regarding the Mayan settlement pattern, what was the land type at that time, their use of natural resources, etc and a number of clues of that civilization.
You can also find the hidden masterpiece in the museum through NASA. Those working in the museum always find evidences of second painting under the painting they are looking at. Generally, the painting is x-rayed, but x-rays display only blurred images without any adequate details of the subject. NASA was asked to offer help so that the covered painting can be viewed clearly and completely.
NASA developed a way to separate the two x-ray images using a technique that was used for processing the images from spacecraft. This computer program extracts the top painting form the bottom, and hence you can view the underneath painting in detail, as well. Thus, the art museums now have an option while trying to interpret the work done by the previous artists using the NASA technology.
The Dead Sea scrolls are brought to life in the museum through NASA. The Dead Sea scrolls were found in a cave. The prehistoric parchments featured many materials in the Bible. These scrolls are recently available throughout the world to the experts. However, there is a problem that some of the scrolls appear totally ruined to the naked eye. The black ink cannot be viewed against the ancient parchment. Some of these parchments were provided to NASA.
NASA used the technique first to document monitoring at the National Archives. The fragments were observed with computerized image-processing techniques and highly sensitive electronic cameras. Finally, NASA was able to increase the contrast between the parchment and ink. Thus, the images can now be read clearly and are visible flawlessly with the advent of NASA’s advanced technology.
