NASA at the Airport
Our airports are currently using NASA and are benefitting greatly from this technology. Let us have a brief overlook on how NASA at the Airport has proved significant.
Bad weather is always a bad news for the aeroplanes. Lighting is an unpredictable element of storm. The Langley Research Center of NASA has played a significant role in the lightning investigations. In this project a research lane was used that was made to fly in the storms with a hope that it will be hit by lightning. Their hope came true and the airplane was struck from more than eight hundred times.
NASA came to a conclusion that lightning injects electrical currents in the airplane that causes problems in its electronic systems, leading to incorrect instrument readings. NASA worked with the lightning technologies on the Strom Hazard Research Programs. They have been successful and are now selling lightning protection systems to aircraft the manufactures throughout the world.
Another risky case for the aircraft is the windshear. It results in aircraft accidents and loss of number of lives. NASA in association with the Federal aviation Administration found out a way to foresee windshear that will give enough warnings to the pilots to take preventive measures. A system that was the first innovative system in the airline service was named as Doppler Microwave Radar. It sends radio waves at the forefront of the aircraft that will bounce off the raindrops in the thunderstorm and returns back to the instrument. The computer measures the Doppler shift and it informs the pilot about the wind’s speed in a windshear. Thus, with these warning signals, the pilot can avoid going in that area or he can make certain adjustments in the speed or altitude of the plane.
With the aid of NASA, air travel has become safe and convenient for the passengers and troops throughout the world. Most o the American airlines use his system to ensure the safety of their passengers.
Collision avoidance is yet other problems faced in the airline service. NASA developed a test for this collision avoidance system. It used ground-based flight stimulators and tested the airline pilots how well they can understand this tact and how much time they required to respond to different situations. This software, named TACS was then altered to make it fast, convenient and easy to use. All the passenger planes you fly in nowadays contain the TACS software. NASA had made this system ready to use and thus this software is now installed in all the passenger planes having more than ten seats form the year 1995.
These innovations made by NASA, especially at the airport are indeed noteworthy. Airport is a place where number of people is moving back and forth to travel to various countries. It is a crowdy place and needs to be safe from all the hazards. Thanks, to the technology of NASA that ensures the safety of lives of number of people.
