NASA World Wind Download

NASA World Wind has to be downloaded first and then it can be used through an internet connection. However, it is important to note NASA World Wind is a large program and therefore it use up some of the computers memory. Nevertheless, NASA World Wind is a very useful program.

For downloading NASA World Wind the user should have a computer with some minimum software and system requirements.

The minimum system requirements are as given below.

An operating system like windows 2000, 2003, XP, or Vista

NASA World Wind was not actually meant for Windows Vista. A 3D graphics card is important.

The system should be connected to internet while using NASA World Wind

It should be noted that NASA World Wind does not support Linux or Macintosh at this moment.

Some of the software requirements are as follows.

For downloading and installing NASA World Wind, the installer should be able to find and install these softwares by default.

Microsoft .NET 2.0

Microsoft Managed Directx 9.0c (which was redistributed in October 2005)

A Ram of minimum 128 MB

Free disk space of about 500MB

The performance of NASA World Wind will depend on the configuration and will be better for a better configuration. Therefore, to get a desired result instead of the abovementioned Minimum configuration the following configuration would be better.

Minimum1.4Ghz CPU

RAM of minimum 256 MB

Minimum DSL or cable internet connection

Free disk space of 3 GB

Note that additional CPU and GPU resources are required for the features as atmospheric scattering and sun shading.

Any user who has a computer with these requirements can download and install NASA World Wind and then freely use it with the help of an internet connection.

Downloading it is very simple. The link for downloading it is present on the official website of NASA World Wind.

Currently version 1.4 is the most recent one. NASA World Wind also has a source code. However, it is only for the developers. The common users who wish to use NASA World Wind only for viewing imagery do not require it. They need only a Full install.

However, note that there are no restrictions on downloading the source code. The common users can download both the Full install as well as the source code. In this case, once the user runs the Full install he can copy Data directory from its directory into the source directory.

Some problems can however occur during downloading and installing NASA World Wind. Some of them are discussed below.

In some cases, the users get a dialog box saying World Wind Fatal Error. In such cases try to set the display to 16 or 32 bits color. The 16-bit colors work very smoothly and do not cause any issue. However, some people have experienced issues with the 24 and 32-bit colors.
