Does anybody know what is this NASA World Wind?
It is an open source software that runs only on Windows. It allows you to zoom from high satellite altitude to any location on Earth. It leverages SRTM data and landsat satellite imagery to give you a chance to view Earth terrain in 3D.
Is it possible to download World Wind?
Yes, it is possible. The latest version available is 1.4.0. If you want to get latest version of this software, visit the NASA World Wind download website.
IS it possible to access source code?
You can access source code. This source code is only for developers. If you want to use NASA World Wind software, all you require is a full install. In case you want source code, you can download both. Once you have run full install, you need to copy data directory from World Wind install directory into the source directory
What must be the system requirements if one wants to install this software?
For installing this software, your computer must have Windows 2000, 2003, XP or Vista. If your computer has Linux operating system then you will have to install Windows operating system, as it doesn't operate on Linux operating system. A 3D graphics card is also essential. An internet connection is also must.Although the software runs under Windows, is the software compatible with Windows 95, 98 and ME?
These versions are not maintained any more by Microsoft, hence new features introduced in NASA World Wind are not compatible with them. That is why the software is no longer expected to operate on these systems.
What are the minimum configurations required to run this software?
If you want that the software should successfully run on your pc then the CPU speed should be minimum 500MHz. The RAM size should be minimum 128 MB. 500 MB of disk space is also essential.
What problems can occur even after the software program is installed successfully?
Fatal Error dialog box appears: In case this error occurs, when the software loads, set your display unit to 32 or 16 bit color. It has been reported that 32 or 24 bit color is responsible for this problem. 16 bit does work without any problem. You should also check whether the graphic card is compatible.Sometimes a message such as “unable to create Direct3D m_Device3d” error is displayed.
In such a case, make sure that video card drivers are indeed up to date. Ensure that Managed DirectX has also been installed. Go to start->run and then type 'dxdiag'. This will load DirectX Diagnosis program.
Sometimes the program crashes, when it is opened with “JIT debugger” error message. Such crashes are one of the worst to handle. The thread ID and process ID are pointless and they really don't help at all. Some suggest that installing this software requirement can fix these issues. If your computer is crashing then this may be due to a hardware problem. You should verify if your computer is stable with 3D graphics.
