Review on NASA World Wind

This NASA World Wind program is an open source 3D interactive world viewer which was designed by NASA’s learning technology. This program was released in mid-2004. You will think that world wind as simple desk globe but it is not a simple desk globe. With the help of world wind the user can zoom from outer space into the place on earth he wants.

World wind makes use of elevations data and satellite imagery for allowing users to experience the earth terrain in rich 3D to get the feeling of being actually present in that location. With the help of world wind you can virtually visit to any place like into the Grand Canyon, along the African Sahara, over the Alps and across the Andes.

World wind can show you thousands of placenames of country capitals and villages. You are also able to see country borders and intracountry borders like US states. World wind offers some features which are given below:

Moon: It is one of the best features of world wind because with this feature you can view moon by making use of version 1.3.3. For viewing moon within world wind you have to double click on the World Wind Moon 1.3 desktop icon by selection start->programs->NASA->World wind Moon 1.3. The different moon layers are toggled on or off just with click on corresponding icon of world wind toolbar.

There are some add-ons which give you detail information about the moon. Moon pictures are one kind of Add-on which includes markers on the moon so by clicking it you can see images of that area. This kind of add-On is complied from satellites, Lunar Orbiters and Apollo landings. Moon phases are another Add-on which displays four icons and when you will click on these icons, launch an applet which allows you to see the recent phase of the moon and it also allows you to see the hours and dates of the next main phases. The present age of the moon, the distance of the moon and the dates of perigee and apogee are displayed. Venus and Mars: with this feature you can view Venus in world wind by making use of version 1.3.4. For viewing Venus just select Start->programs->NASA->World Wind Venus 1.3. Various Venus layers are toggled on or off just with click on corresponding icon of world winds toolbar.

Jupiter: Jupiter is one of the biggest planets of solar system which is viewable in world wind by making use of version 1.3.4. Jupiter is the 5th planet from the sun which is more massive rather than combined mass of other planets. For viewing Jupiter just select start->programs->NASA->World Wind Jupiter 1.3.
