Some basic questions on NASA world wind
Is it possible to use the 1.2e cache in 1.3e?
Yes it is possible. The procedure for doing so is as given under.
1. First of all download the appropriate location file.
2. when you do this, unzip it into your NASA folder. This would make it easy to find it later.
3. After this you need to copy the cache folders, of 1.2e, which are to be converted.
These are as follows.
a) \NASA\World Wind v1.2\Cache\Earth\High-Resolution Terrain Mapped Imagery\JPL Global Landsat Mosaic (False-Color Bands - Panshapened)
b) \NASA\World Wind v1.2\Cache\Earth\High-Resolution Terrain Mapped Imagery\JPL Global Landsat Mosaic (Visible Bands - Panshapened)
4. Copy out these folders into the root folder of NASA
5. After doing so double click, and the moving cache executable. It will open a small application window which asks for the folder which you want to convert.
6. Then click the browser button and then copy, one of the above folders, from the place where you have pasted them.
7. Click “Fix”, and the conversion will be done for you.
8. When this is done, choose the other cache folder and repeat the same.
Doing the above mentioned steps correctly will have the cache folders and files converted. Now you will be able to view them in the World Wind 1.3
Then go into the folder JPL Global LandSat Mosaic. Here (False- Color Brands – Panshapened) and there copy folders 0 to 6 in the NASA World Wind 1.3 Cache. These are located at the address: \NASA\World Wind 1.3\Cache\Earth\High Resolution Imagery\Community LandSat7 (visible Color.)
on doing this, you are done. Restart NASA World Wind and select either the WWC Pseudo layer or the WWC Visible layer. Ensure that you have copied over images.
What is the size of data set? Does NASA World Wind provide it for download?
The collective size of all data sets taken together is about 4.6 Terabytes. You cannot download all them as a single full package for a localized download. Nevertheless, they are available in the form of cache packs.
What’s with the bit torrent for data sets?
As the size of data available is too large and the users download only limited amount of it, p2p may not make much of a dent for the problem of serving such data.
Is it possible to narrow down search for a place?
This problem has come to notice of NASA World Wind. It has approximately 2 million places currently. It is adding about 3 million more. Moreover, it is also going to associate a Place with some country or geographic identity. When this happens, you can enter the name of country or geographic region for limiting your search. For example if you are searching for London in UK. You can enter the keyword “London UK” and you will get results only for London in UK.
Moreover, NASA World Wind is also aware that the searching toll is case sensitive at this moment. It is going to change that as well.
