The NASA World Wind introduction 2
The add-ons and plug-ins can be added to the NASA World Wind and they increase the features and thus are useful for the users.
Because of its resolution, it can show separately, the adjacent houses, buildings, cars, etc. This feature is called USGS. Moreover, in some of the metropolitan areas, with the help of the USGS Urban Ortho layer, it can show the resolution distinguishing even the shadows of the people.
However, the above said resolution is only for places in the US. Even then, the minimum resolution for the other regions is at least more than 15 meters for each pixel.
It also provides the high resolution imagery that it has obtained from the Virtual Earth. However, this can be used only for the non-commercial use.
One of the unique features of the NASA World Wind is the digital elevation model data i.e. the DEM. This is the data that the Nasa’s shuttle radar Topography Mission has collected. This feature makes it possible to get the 3D images of the important geographical landmarks as the Grand Canyon or the Mount Everest, etc. another feature named the bathymetry would enable the users to get the images of the of the different features of the oceans. These include the deeply situated trenches, ridges, etc. Further, note that these images too, are three-dimensional.
In addition to this to this the users of the NASA World Wind also add their own data at the sources as the NASA World Wind central or its blogs. This too can be very useful at times. For example, the user living at certain place may put the data about that place.
Also note that, you can create own copy the images and movies using the NASA World Wind Blue Marble, Landsat, or USGS, public domain data. Moreover, they can freely alter them or also store and distribute either through online or offline and that too even for the commercial purposes.
Add-ons and plug-ins
It is possible to increase the use of the NASA World Wind by just adding the add-ons and the plug-ins to it. They act as small extensions to the program and they enhance the use and features of the NASA World Wind.
Some of the add-ons are given bellow
Point layers: they are XML files and are useful for displaying the placemarks i.e. the points of interest in the form of the icons.
Trail layers: they can be used as lines for showing boundaries and paths.
Line features: they are XML files having a list of the points in the form of filled polygons features. They are either flat or extruded.
Model features: They are the XML files and are useful for loading of 3D textured meshes.
Place names: They are the labels that you can add to the things as buildings houses cities, etc.
Image layers: they are the imagery of the world and they have very high resolution.
Scripts: they are the files that can help you for controlling the movements of the camera.
On the other hand, the plug-ins is simple and small programs, which are written, in C#, VB, or J##. They are complied by the NASA World Wind at the time of startup. An important point related to these plug-ins, is that, they add to the features of the NASA World Wind and while doing so they do not cause any changes in the source code.
