What exactly NASA World Wind provides
World wind walkthrough tends to give a guide to basic features of world wind. There are number of walkthroughs available in World wind tour. The WW Tour is a flash animation, which will walk you through the features and functions of world wind. This will be of great use to first time users of World wind. In fact, it is not a perfect guide and it will not help in solving problems. Now let us have a look at how to upload this program on your computer. First, users need to double click on World wind icon. Then a screen will appear. Normally a white screen with clouds will appear. Then the tool bar will be displayed. There will be lot of buttons in the screen. The position information button, place name, borders and Land sat are the most significant buttons. If they do not appear in the tool bar, users need to turn on them by clicking the respective buttons.
Click on the globe to rotate the globe and make use of your mouse to move around. Then you can check the imagery. You just click the place names one by one to stay away from congestion. Then zoom in by rotating the mouse keeping it away from you or holding both the buttons and moving mouse away from you.
World wind will provide information about where you are now in the world. Wait for sometime. Then you will see the planet earth in different colors. Then tilt the earth to obtain 3-Dimensional view of the earth. Select “view exaggeration” and set the number as 2. This will be a correct number. If you want, you can increase or decrease the number in which the mountains will appear steep and less steep.
You can zoom in and rotate our planet earth with the help of your mouse. Black and white tiles should appear at this stage. It will provide you 1m resolution images. These tiles are available to United States only and not anywhere else. Color tiles with .25 m resolution will appear. However, this is available for few selected cities of United States only. The rest of US will appear plainly white. The imageries are the best feature of World wind. You are able to view the place names to see the number of places in the earth from capitals to villages.
Add-ons are new feature of World wind but NASA does not produce them. You are able to view add-ons for numerous areas of interest. If the add-ons are large in number, you need to use “layer manager” to organize them. The layer manager will list the add-ons with the small square. You can click on the square. The tick mark will appear to indicate activation. If some add on have sub menus, I will be marked with small triangle along with square. When you click on this, the items in sub menu will be displayed with the circle. Click on the circle to activate them.
