Add-on installation
Most of the add-ons listed on the World Wind Central page come as a self-installing executable file. Anyone can easily download them. While downloading add-ons, double click on them and follow on-screen instruction as generally you do for any other application. However, every user should ensure that World Wind is closed before installing new add-ons. Once it is installed, start World Wind and the add-on will be automatically loaded on your PC. Several add-ons will add an icon to your World Wind tool bar. Other add-ons can be activated from the Layer Manager. If you want to open the Layer Manager, just click on the icon in the tool bar of World Wind.
The Layer Manager will show you a list of installed add-ons with any imagery data sets included by NASA. If you want to activate the add-on, find the add-on you are searching for in the list and then click in the square box next to its name. The add-on will be activated when you tick in the square box with its name. When you want to close the selected add-on, just click the cross at the top right of the Layer Manager.
Some add-ons also have extra options like the Solar System add-on. If you want to find additional options, open the Layer Manager and click on the appropriate triangle next to the name of the add-on. After that, a sub menu will come out with several options. If you want to select an item in a sub menu, then only click on the tiny circle next to the item.
Recommended Plug-ins
Virtual Earth
virtual earth is one of the recommended plug-ins. It provides World Wind users with the ability to see imagery from Microsoft's local.live.com website. However, users should note that this imagery is owned by Microsoft and can be used only for non-commercial purposes. Any other use of it should be coordinated with the Microsoft Virtual Earth team. All imageries are copyrighted and should not be redistributed in any form.
Planimetric Measure Tool
Planimetric measure tool is a very useful plug-in. It permits the users to measure the distance between two points within World Wind. Moreover, it could be a very helpful tool for geography lessons.
Near Realtime Earthquake Marker
Near Realtime Earthquake Marker plug-in is another useful tool for geology and geography teachers. This tool appropriately shows you marker points where earthquake has occurred.
Anaglyph 3D
If you have a pair of red anaglyph glasses in your cupboard, then you must install the Anaglyph 3D plug-in. Once this tool is installed, wear your glasses and you will see a real 3-dimensional earth, or other heavenly body you desire.
Recommended Add-ons
Mars is one of the recommended add-ons. This add-on can help you see the red planet. This add-on contains fairly high-resolution Mars imagery and a list of place names. You can easily look for the largest volcano in the Solar system Olympus Mons. This is the only downside to this add-on which does not include elevation data.
