World wind for personal use
World wind is an open source application developed by NASA with a view to enable every individual knows about the researches of NASA. You can use it for education, research or simply for fun. As it is a free source application, you can extend or embed the source code to suit your personal use and can share with other users through web.
There are some attractive things that you can do with world wind. You can view your house or city or even village. World wind has place name feature that lets you see your city or village. You can explore the mountain or ocean in 3 D.
The real 3 D feature of world wind gives you a feeling as if you were crossing the mountain or diving in the sea. For this purpose WW has developed a new feature called Anaglyph 3 D mode. It will ensure you to view the true 3 D. You can wear red or blue Anaglyph glasses to view this. The glasses will be available withy most magazines at free of cost.
You can search even a small village in World wind with its Place finder feature. Just type the name of the place with the correct capital letter and spelling. Or you can select from the drop down list to locate a place. You can then save the named location in Favorite.
You can view the earth’s moon in world wind. There is a moon tutorial that will explain how to view the moon in World wind. You can view moon by double clicking World wind moon 1.3. There are several Moon add ons in world wind like Lunar Phases, Lunar Land marks, Lunar Geology, Moon Pictures, Stars and star 3D. You can select this add ons and see the necessary details.
You can also view the planets like MARS, Jupiter, Venus and Earth in world wind. You can also view the distant galaxies. This will enlighten you about the planets in solar system. This is not only for time passing but it is highly educative.
You can get details about climate and weather conditions with the help of MODIS, GLOBE etc. MODIS will provide accurate data about Global changes and the consequences in climate. You will be able to understand the global changes like changes in the ocean, land surface and in the atmosphere.
You can view your trips with the help of GPS tracker. GPS supports nearly 100 different file formats. You can rewind, pause and fast forward with GPS. You can also play back the files at different speeds. You can view sunsets and sunrises. World wind shows the realistic imageries of Sun shading and Atmosphere scattering. For this you need a modern Pc with 3 D graphic cards. Older pcs will not support this feature.
You can understand how earth has changed over the past decades. World wind has such comparison of Earth in 1990 and 2000. You can get details of any country in the globe from CIA World fact book.
