World wind GLOBE
GLOBE is an abbreviation for Global learning and observing to Benefit the Environment. It is a program based on educating primary and secondary school students. It is a science and education program funded by NASA and National science Foundation. You can view GLOBE data in world wind by using Web map browser. Just follow the simple steps to view GLOBE data. First start world wind with the world Earth. Earth is a default world.
You can also select Moon or Mars. Then click the Web map service browser icon. Hen you will be listed with two servers. NASA SVS image server and GLOBE visualization server. You click on + sign near GLOBE visualization server. It will provide you a list of data sets. Continue the process until the desired data set is derived. Then View the selected data set. If you want to animate the data set, select “animation” tab.World wind allows viewing data sets in 3 D environment including GLOBE data sets. Many of the data provided by world wind are too large so that you can not down load them entirely. On the other hand download them part by pert and store them in compressed format.
World wind application can be downloaded from NASA web site. It is an open source application. So you can extend or embed the source code for your use and must share it with others in the web.
GLOBE is a collective program created by the team effort of schools with the help of colleges and universities, state and local school system and non government organizations. It is a partnership between US and other 100 countries that manage and support national and regional infra structure and activities.
The animated data sets in GLOBE for weather events are designed by Goddar flight space research center. MODIS helps to update the data regularly. You can view thousands of place names, countries, capitals and villages here. You can view the border between countries and intra bordered between US states.
If you select Earth in GLOBE, it will turn and spin in the direction of click so as to provide new view points. GLOBE can be viewed for air temperature, weather forecasts or just simply exploring Earth.
GLOBE has separate page for providing guidelines to teachers. There are so many chapters here like Atmosphere chapter, soil Chapter, Biology, Tool kit, Earth as a system and so on. There are data sets and Lab and field guides also. This will enable the teacher to improve his lectures. The conventional methods and tools like class room teaching and lectures are not enough to enlighten a student in practical problem solving efforts. GLOBE aims to educate students practically. It ensures the students to communicate scientifically with professionals.
GLOBE also provides teacher’s guide related to concepts. The teacher can search the related concepts he is teaching. The concepts are classified by grade level also. There are so many options here like mathematics, Physical science, life science, Geography, Earth and space science and so on.
