World wind helps in education
NASA world wind plays a vital role in education. It allows you zoom any part of the earth from satellite altitude. Its visually delight 3 D technology provides you a feeling as if you were really there. World wind is a project of Learning Technologies to promote learners in doing research and development based on the data provided by NASA.
NASA world wind is a free open source application written in the programming language JAVA. World wind can display thousands of place names even capitals and villages. It shows borders between countries as well as intra borders between US states. The students can extend or embed the original code for his research purposes. He can publish his code in the web.
World wind education page tends to provide information and data for using NASA world wind in high schools and universities. There is a link in this page to world wind curricula which provides information in two area geology and math. In geology you can view the several bodies of our solar system like earth, Moon, Mars etc. You can also learn about the forces that shape the planets. World wind allows you to view the planets in different angles and so you can even measure the elevations and areas.
World wind deals with another area that can be used in school and college level. It helps to learn about plate tectonics, earth quakes, ocean floor etc. If you want to find the distance between two points in a volcano, you can measure it with world wind. Activate the measure tool by pressing m or select measure directly from the menu. Look at the volcano first and then select two points as top and base of the volcano. Record the highest point in the volcano. Move the cursor to the base and measure it. The difference between the highest point and base is the height of the volcano.
You can also measure the lava flow by using measure keys in world wind. But lava flows are irregular. So split the areas in small segments for measurements and then add them together to find the height.
World wind helps in learning geometry that is measuring prime real estate areas, Trigonometry, Right triangle, algebra and slope investigations. It will be great help to Math students in high school and college level.
