Climate Mapper plug-in of SERVIR-Viz
The new tool added to SERVIR Viz called Climate Mapper. It is great climate change model which no other map based application offers. User can access this community across platform. Visitors can view climate change projection till 2030’s against landscape. Developers are thinking to adapt the technology in their application. Until now this tool available for Africa by covering 50km * 50km. Soon this Mapper will cover entire globe and it will also include historical period. The data added to the application is provided by reputed sources. It maintains really huge database to save climate observations of different parts of earth.
This tool provides monthly data for over a decade like in you select Feb month then the climate model will show it for current decades 10 Feb. month’s climate details. The data generated is combined output of three amazing models developed by Atmosphere research community. These models were chosen by SERVIR Viz because it represents lowest, middle and highest changes of Climate Moisture Index. These models are run by using A1B scenario. These models also represent current carbon emission and the bad-effects on the globe. The data is presented is most simple form with graphs and maps. It takes average base period as 30 years and then the data is calculated.
This plug-in is added by SERVIR-Viz and you can say it as it is customized version of World Wind NASA. This software taps different local data layers, satellite images and maps. SERVIR-Viz interact with World Wind NASA to provide 3D globe environment. This new Climate Mapper plug-in lets you zoom into different areas within Africa. If you don’t find viewing in maps simple then view the summarized data in the form of graphs and charts. Moreover, this application does not require high speed on Internet connection like World Wind NASA or Google Earth. The data is stored on client computer and viewed from the cache only.
SERVIR-Viz was launched to help people especially African people as SERVIR means “to serve”. Every Government is Africa access this earth observation system to monitor climate changes. Many times it has proven absolutely useful tool. Many countries use the information specified on SERVER-Viz for civil defense agency. Critical decisions like evacuation or alert for landslides is taken on the basis of data given on SERVIR-Viz. Many times, it was responsible for preventing loss of life as landslides were detected through this application. Moreover, it gives regular weather forecasting which is accurate. This is a great joint venture of NASA, CATHALAC and International Development agency of US.
The project has partners like Central US’s commission for the Development and Environment, World Band and few other reputed agencies. It collects data from different satellites which are managed by NOAA and NASA. This data is combined with ground-based observations and then uploaded on the SERVIR-Viz’s website. Looking at real time weather and climate changes around Mesoamerica is simply amazing. It is not only just a high-tech weather station but also monitor floods, volcanoes, wildfires etc. Nonetheless, it is trying to fulfill other ecological challenges.
