Earth browser data
This satellite program has many useful and interesting datasets that are available in Earth browser tab of control window. There are many groupings of data sets, first group is base datasets, and they contain real time data. You will also find global weather forecasts for continental US. Finally, there are settings for controlling various viewing options.
Base datasets:
Weather: Weather data is now updated hourly. It is shown as a collection of current condition icons that are across the globe. There is an arrow on weather dataset. When you turn it down it will reveal cities based on state, province, country, or continent. You can also add a city in this data set and also set zoom level for weather icon.
Clouds: Here you will find information on global cloud coverage. It is generated from infrared images of geostationary satellites and is updated every three hours.
Doppler radar: Doppler radar for United States and its territories is now available in this dataset. There is mosaic of continental US, high-resolution regional mosaics and also higher resolution images from every individual station. The data is from 'National Weather Doppler radar' website.
Earthquakes: You will be glad to know that earthquake data set is frequently updated. It is updated after every ten minutes and displays global quakes that have a magnitude of 4 or higher. For United States and its territories, it shows Earthquakes even of magnitude 1. The data is gathered from 'USGS Earthquake hazards program'.
Volcanoes: This dataset displays the location as well as activity level of various volcanoes that are around the world. Thus, you can find out whether volcanoes are active or not. The dataset also gives periodic updates of any new activity and unrest that is issued on weekly basis. The data is gathered from Smithsonian global volcanism program.
Tectonic plates: Plate boundaries are listed in this dataset that are generated by USGS. Convergence data are displayed by arrows that describe the speed and direction relative to plate across the boundary.
Countries of the Globe: This shows the list of political entities that are internationally recognized and is generated from CIA World fact book. The flag of that country is displayed above its location. When you click on a flag, it will give information of that country such as population, economy, transportation, military, government, and some history about how it was created. You will also come to know about international borders of various countries. Earth browser data sets also contain a set of web cams that are categorized by state, country, and region.
US forecasts: US forecast data is generated from National centers for environmental prediction (NAM) data sets, which is updated twice daily. The US forecast data is group into three-hour block that display data of last 3 days and provide forecasts for the coming 3 days. The data set gives information such as the snowfall accumulated, temperature of regions, atmospheric pressure, relative humidity, wind direction, and cloud coverage.
Global forecasts: Here the data is generated from global forecasts system datasets, which is updated twice daily.
