Earth browser FAQ

Earth browser is easy to use and generally, you would not have to face any problem while using it. Nevertheless, some problems do occur however, they can be resolved easily. Below given are some of the common problems and answers for them.

What to do, if the screen turns blank, while trying to run Earth Browser on Windows?

This is one of the common problems. It can happen if you have installed the new version of QuickTime namely 7.1.0 on a computer having Windows operating system.

This problem occurs because there is a problem with the quick time itself. However, apple has fixed the problem in the new version 7.1.3. Therefore, if you upgrade the quick time the problem will be solved.

Why do the areas of high-resolution maps do not appear as usual.

NASA had processed the raw satellite data from more than 8500 scenes. For getting the 15-meter resolution images, this raw data was sharpened using a process called “panchromatic” band of data. This band is not in the normal color range and shifts the colors towards the purple range. Moreover, there are seams at which one scene overlaps the other. An attempt was made to average the colors from these different scenes so that the sharp edges could be avoided. All this is responsible for the problem.

Currently the team of Earth Browser is working to develop new high-resolution base map. It will be available shortly in the version 3.0. Therefore, this version will have this problem fixed and moreover it will feature much better quality images.

Why is Earth Browser not providing updated data? Moreover, the map provided is low resolution.

Answer: the common reason for this problem is that your computer was not connected to internet at the time of launching the EarthBrowser. The internet connection often gets temporarily disconnected and because of this, you may have previously experienced different types of problems with the use of internet.

Therefore, as you usually do while doing other tasks on internet, retry. While doing this first try connecting and then when it fails EarthBrowser will provide you an option to quit. Quit and then again restart EarthBrowser. If this time your computer is connected to internet, EarthBrowser will display “server connected” in the lower left side corner on the window, immediately after it is launched.

Apart from disconnection with the internet firewall software as well, can cause this problem. Therefore, if your computer is installed with such software you can add EarthBrowser to the list of programs that the firewall should allow. This can be done through the firewall settings.

Why does EarthBrowser not display volcano information while running it through Safari web browser?

Safari web browser does not support the Smithsonian Volcano website. For some reason it does not like text encoding of Smithsonian volcano website. Therefore, if you want to view the volcano information you need to change the encoding.

For this go to view menu of Safari and from the Text Encoding submenu choose ISO-Latin encoding. On doing so, the volcano information will be viewable.
