Volcanoes

With the GEOSS Decision Support you can view and know more about the volcanoes in Mesoamerica.

The Pacific Plate that is also called as the “Ring of Fire” is the place where most Central American volcanoes are located. There are no active volcanoes on the Atlantic side of Central America.

It is important to monitor the activity of volcanoes, for reducing the risks associated with volcanic activity. The monitoring of volcanoes includes the things like detecting the changes in magma movement, under the volcano and anticipating whether a volcanic eruption ahead of time. It also involves detecting volcanic events like explosive eruptions and lahars, which are the volcanic debris or mudflows.

The SERVIR products associated with it include Digital Elevation Models of Mesoamerican volcanoes. These models have been developed by SERVIR research affiliate SSAI. A “Volcano Cam”, plug in from SERVIR-VIZ is allows you to view live-webcams for select Mesoamerican volcanoes. For this click on the SERVIR data portal link, and enter the keywords, Volcanoes for accessing the DEMs and other associated products.

Floods in the Mesoamerican region

Floods in different parts of Central America are a yearly phenomenon. The reasons for these yearly floods are high density of water bodies and high amount of rainfall. Moreover, in some cases poor infrastructure also is one of the reasons. SERVIR and its associates provides different products which help in monitoring the present floods and analysing the previously occurred ones.

The Dartmouth Flood Observatory (DFO) uses the AMSR-E , microwave measurements for measuring the discharge and watershed runoff. This it does every two days, and for 25 river reach sites in Central America. This data is published by SERVIR on a web-map service, which everybody can view. The DAA on this service updates immediately after it receives new data. Generally the updates are done once every two days.

Symbols for different types of maps are given in SERVIR-VIZ. When you click on these symbols, you get the further detailed maps or information. You can also get a framework layer, of this map, in SERVIR-VIZ.

I highly recommend the Google Software Pack. It comes with a lot of great software that is all FREE. You can also pick and choose which of the software products you want to download. You don't have to download them all. If you have a Mac or you don't want the Google Software Pack for some reason you can download it directly from the main site.
