Servir Viz - most advanced virtual globe
Servir is the regional Monitoring and visualization system for Mesoamerica. Servir is a Spanish term and basically it means to serve. Mesoamerica is a region, which is spread from Panama to southern Mexico, and it includes Costa Rica, Belize, Nicaragua, Guatemala, EL Salvador and Honduras. The Servir Viz has been developed by the Institute for the Application of Geospatial Technology in short IAGT. Servir Viz is an easy to use, free data access tool. It is also used as a visualization framework in order to distribute region specific thematic maps, GIS data, remote sensing imagery as well as other technical products.
Background of the Servir Project
The Servir project works hard to increase the use of Earth science observations as well as predictive modeling capabilities. This is done to manage the vital resources of Mesoamerica. It also provides this helpful information to decision makers. Servir strictly uses satellite photography and other data sources for ecological management and natural disaster management. The mitigation support in the Mesoamerica region is also provided by the Servir Viz. There are a number of sponsors and supporters to this project. NASA is the major supporter of this project. Several other sponsors of the Servir project are IAGT, the University of Alabama at Huntsville, the World Bank, the US agency for International Development and the Environmental Ministries of the Mesoamerican regions.
The basic role of IAGT in Servir project is to provide improved mapping and visualization capabilities. This enhanced capacity helps decision makers understand the dynamic ecological and environmental issues in Mesoamerica. Once they understand these issues thoroughly, then they can easily find solutions over these problems. The IAGT has worked with a number of visualization applications. It has also designed a number of tools in order to serve a different purposes and end users. Due to this experience, the IAGT has been able to fast track improvement of Servir Viz. The IAGT has been doing this with the help of the Servir project and its other partners.
Servir Viz download is an advanced version of NASA’s web enabled, open source, free, 3D Earth browsing tool that is known as World Wind. Servir Viz permits users to utilize custom tools and see, share and access maps, actual time satellite photos, remotely hosted data layers, and other Servir products in a 3D globe, interactive atmosphere.
The Servir Viz also improves the Servir project structure by giving access to data products of the global earth observation system of systems GEOSS. It also provides access to other internet served GIS data products. The GEOSS data is arranged by topic and it contains themed areas like climate, ocean, disaster, ecology, and weather. The goal of GEOSS is to get coordinated, comprehensive, and sustained observations of the earth system. The GEOSS does this to enhance administration of the state of the Earth, as well as to boost knowledge of earth processes. The GEOSS data available within the Servir Viz can be made animated and transparent over a period of time.
