When Mark talks, Google Listens
I just found out something pretty cool today on Digg.com. Apparently there was a bit of a public hue and cry about Google's waste of energy from using a white background on their main search page. And by "a bit" I mean basically that ONE article was written on ONE environmentally conscious person on his website. He just worked out the math to determine approximately how much energy gets used on a high volume website such as Google simply by having a white background vs a black background. The results were quite interesting.
And the coolest part of it all is that someone, or perhaps several someones, at Google saw this article and actually responded by creating a black background, energy-saving version of Google called "Blackle"! I don't know about you, but I think that is pretty awesome. Here is the entire original post at ecoIron. Original post by Mark Ontkush, the blog's creator and owner. Well done, Mark. :)
